Ikechukwu Ogbonna, a 37-year-old auto dealer, also known as IVD, appeared before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Monday.
He was arraigned for the alleged manslaughter of his late wife, Abimbola, who died in a fire incident at their home in Lekki, Lagos.
The Lagos State Government preferred the charge of involuntary manslaughter against Ogbonna in suit No LD/21055C/23.
Adeshola Bello, the prosecuting counsel, told the court that there was an error in the date the alleged offence was committed.
Bello requested the court’s permission to amend the charge, and the court granted it.
He stated that the alleged offence contravened Section 229 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Ogbonna, who was arraigned before Justice Modupe Nicole-Clay, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The defendant’s counsel, Mr Victor Ogunde, SAN, requested bail for his client.
While considering the bail application, the judge inquired the reason for the bail application when the defendant had been on bail since March 1.
The defence counsel responded that the previous charge against his client had a different charge number.
Justice Nicole-Clay adjourned the case until March 30, May 24 and 25, 2023, for trial.
Furthermore, It would be recalled that Abimbola’s death on October 12, 2022, caused serious uproar.
