Entertainer of the Year: Usher’s Journey and Gratitude At NAACP Awards
At the 55th annual NAACP Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Usher was celebrated as the “Entertainer of the Year.”
The renowned R&B artist, with a career spanning three decades, expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reflected on his recent achievements.
Accepting the award, Usher recounted significant milestones, including his sold-out Las Vegas residency, marriage, album release, and historic Super Bowl halftime performance. “I don’t know how many people do that much stuff in one setting,” remarked the multi-Grammy winner.
Presented with the award by Oprah Winfrey, Usher extended his appreciation to his supporters, affectionately addressing them as his “number ones.” His speech culminated with lyrics from his hit song “Superstar,” emphasizing the journey that led to his success.
Philanthropic Contributions Recognized
Earlier in the ceremony, Usher was honored with the President’s Award for his philanthropic efforts through the New Look Foundation.

Acknowledging the influential women in his life, including his mother and wife Jenn Goicoechea, Usher emphasized the importance of their support.
“The say behind or beside or with every strong man is a stronger woman,” he acknowledged.
Recognition of Artistic Excellence At NAACP Award
Among other notable recognitions, “The Color Purple” received the award for Best Motion Picture, while Fantasia Barrino, portraying Celie, won Best Actress in a Motion Picture. New Edition was inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame, celebrating their contribution to the music industry.
In his acceptance speech, Michael Bivins of New Edition highlighted the group’s journey, from overcoming internal conflicts to achieving success and camaraderie. “You’ve seen our story. You know what we’ve been through,” he reflected.
Television and Film Honors
Damson Idris secured the award for Best Actor in a Drama Television Series for his role in “Snowfall,” while Halle Bailey and Colman Domingo were recognized for their supporting roles in “The Color Purple.” Domingo also received the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in “Rustin.”
The ceremony, hosted by Queen Latifah and aired live on BET, celebrated the achievements of artists and writers of color, reaffirming their significant contributions to entertainment and philanthropy.
